BMXers Officially Suck at Art...
Posted by: Cropley | Friday, April 29, 2005I know BMXers are good at art, but man are you kids sucking bad. Right clicking and saving other peoples art off the internet does not make it yours and you will not win the trip to Camp Woodward and you should be arrested for copyright infringement. Don’t be scared to get creative and do something of your own you little punks. Do you understand that two of you will be going to Woodward this summer to ride with Jamie Bestwick? …for FREE!!!! Well it’s true and I sure as hell don’t look like Ashtin Kootcher and we are not punking your asses. This is the real deal, just look at some of the amazing entries we have been getting. If you think you can beat these then send in your art because most everything else sucks and I don't want to send Jamie a bunch of sucky art to judge for his own contest. Now get to work and send us your best stuff!

- This Microsoft Paint masterpiece is a one of a kind. We’ll see what Mr. Bestwick thinks.

- This is a wonderful picture of a bush. A freakin' BUSH! Where the hell is the art?!

- WTF?

- Cute dog. Cute kid. Stylish border. It could be art, but is it too cute?

etnies' New Ads! Do You Love 'em or Hate 'em? Tell Us!
Posted by: Cropley | Tuesday, April 19, 2005We at etnies decided to try something a little different and run some ads that celebrate how good we have it as skateboarders, surfers, dirt bikers, snowboarders and BMXers, while poking a little lighthearted fun at people who have chosen a more traditional path in life.
What other company would give you the chance to tell those responsible for the ads in your favorite magazines what you actually think? Not many. Now take a look at etnies' new "I Wish" ads and let us know if you think they suck ass or kick ass.

Do the chickens have large talons?
Posted by: Cropley | Monday, April 18, 2005A crazy story from Brian Tunney of Dig Magazine...
The long and short of it:
Today, I was riding through a parking lot near my house in an industrial complex. I had just come down a pretty big hill, zipping along at a fairly good speed, when a Canadian goose swooped in from behind, landed its talons into my back and started pecking at my head. I jack knifed over the bars going about 15 mph, then got up to reveal the goose coming straight at me, so I grabbed my bike and kinda did a tailwhip motion and hit it on the side. After the bike landed, it came at me again and I actually punched the bird in the face, which made it relent and take off. I assume I had ridden in close by the goose's eggs and it was protecting them. Anyway, I have a hole in my knee that's gotta be stitched up, and I just got all of the splinters out of my hand. When I jack knifed over the bars my right hand and left knee took the impact and the ground was sketchy, gnarly gravel of course.
This might be the strangest thing that's ever happened to me. I also just realized that the past two times I've been really screwed up and had to go to the hospital have now been because of encounters with wild animals (the other being that I contracted cat scratch fever from a stray cat)....
All I keep thinking is what the f^(#.......

BMX Team Report

- Mike's new Redline
Mike Escamilla spent the majority of the week hanging with his family and chillin. He did get the prototype to his new frame from Redline bikes and it came out “tits” and is a bitchin green and black color. Sunday Mike rode the Primo ramps a little before heading off to go see the movie “Sahara” which he liked a lot. Mike will be competing in the PIG event at Mission Valley skatepark April 18-21. Mikes Rooftop 3 shoe is in stores now.
Jamie Bestwick has been home finally getting some quality time with his pregnant wife Kerry. Jetlag has also finally caught up with Jamie, so spending some time just chilling is honestly just what the doctor ordered. Jamie just returned home from the UK where he competed in vert at BIKE 2005 and obviously destroyed the competition as usual. He was also honored for the second year in a row as the UK rider of the year by the readers of RIDE UK. Congrats Jamie! You-d-man! Regardless of whether he’s winning comps or not, Jamie has been getting himself prepared for the coming contest season which by all accounts is going to be one of the gnarliest contest years to date. Good luck Jamie! Oh Yeah...and be prepared for some crazy shit coming your way from Jamie this year, when you see him ride you’ll be blown away, he’s learned all kinds of new stuff that no one else does.
Also Jamie is super pumped on his new art contest that is being put on by etnies and Camp Woodward where two kids will win a trip to Camp Woodward with Jamie and a bunch of etnies gear. Get all the details and sign up here.

- Taj and Ammie
Taj Mihelich spent Monday at home in Austin for only one day after returning home from Tempe, AZ where he and his band performed at the Tempe music festival. Tuesday Taj headed to New York City to attend etnies fall product release party/get together with etnies teammates Ruben Alcantara and Garrett Byrnes to hang with a whole crew of etnies athletes like Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi, Ryan Sheckler and many, many more. Taj flew home with his girl and spent the whole weekend riding his bike. Look for the T1 ramp to have a little facelift here in the near future. Check out issue 10 of the T1 zine. Taj fly’s out to San Diego this coming week to compete in the PIG event at Mission Valley skatepark. Taj’s shoe the Roscoe is in stores now.
Ruben Alcantara spent the beginning of the week in Malaga before flying out to New York City on Tuesday for the etnies fall line party with teammates Taj Mihelich and Garrett Byrnes. He spent the week sight seeing and enjoying everything that New York has to offer including Central park, the Empire State building and all the awesome restaurants. Ruben flew out to Austin to hang out and ride some trails and the T1 ramp with all his friends for a couple of weeks. Ruben fly’s out of the US on April 22, to hit the road for a couple of months with etnies/T1 team mate Joe Rich for a little secret project that they are working on. Also, Ruben wants to let you know that he really enjoys doing taxes…Not! Ruben shoe Terranea drops in June.
Joe Rich got to ride with street legend, filmer par-excellance and pro-slacker Dave Parrick at the skatepark of Austin on Thursday. Ruben also came to town so he and Joe hit the trails. Joe has been working on his own private darkroom at T1 and his Saturday was consumed with that with a little T1 ramp sesh thrown in for good measure. Joe and the T1 crew have been putting in some time working on a little facelift for the T1 ramp which should commence in the next couple of days and will coincidently put Joe in the poor house…again. Friday, Joe and Sandy Carson did a little street riding and filming of each other.

- Sick photo of Sergio from Fly Bikes
Sergio Layos and his brother Angel bought a motorcycle and have been fixing it up and giving it a paint job to beautify it and then they are going to go shred the jump on it. Sergio has been chilling a lot lately and hanging with his girlfriend but is still riding quite a bit. Sergio heads out to San Diego to compete in the PIG event at the Mission Valley skatepark.
Josh Stricker had big plans for last week. He planned to go shoot pictures with RIDE magazines Jeff Zielinski for his upcoming interview that they are working on. They got a few good things shot but Josh really wanted to pull this 180 over a handicapped rail that he almost pulled on numerous occasions but this one time got bucked off the bike, back slamming his ass on the ground, smacking his elbow and really jarring his whole body and in turn making Josh cough up some blood which really freaked him out. A quick trip to the ER gave him the all clear much to Josh’s relief. Josh has been taking some well deserved time off of his bike.
John Heaton has been enjoying some pretty nice weather up in Hamilton so he’s been doing a lot of outdoor riding, both cement and street. One night he took off on his own to shred the streets, he didn’t go out until at least 12:30am (he must have got kicked out by his girl. haha). Speaking of John’s girl, Andrea is done with school so John and Andrea went out to celebrate and of course, John being John, he took off riding his bike while slightly uncoordinated and ate shit scraping the crap out of his knee. Dumb-ass! John put together his new signature MacNeil frame complete with new press fit bottom bracket and internal headset. Last weekend John went down to Detroit to check out the Albes contest and to hang out with his friend Nate Moroshan. John is also heading out to San Diego to compete in the PIG event at the Mission Valley skatepark.
Dave Freimuth spent his week committing to a little R&R after last months craziness and in preparation for the up coming PIG contest and the west coast MacNeil tour. R&R for Dave consists of firing up his new gas grill the last four days in a row. (Thanks mom and dad!) By the end of summer Dave will be posting recipes! Hee hee. The weather's been amazing in Appleton and the outdoor parks are getting hit up on a regular basis. Thursday Dave shot the last photos for his RIDE UK interview! He’s finally done! Done! Done! So keep an eye out for Dave Freimuth’s long awaited and heavily hyped RIDE UK interview. Saturday, a whole crew including Dave went to a beer tasting festival and just for your information it's not a dirty white trash drunken event, it’s strictly for the malt beverage coinsurer…yeah right! Now Dave’s going to the park to learn candy bars and flip whips for the PIG contest at Mission Valley Skate Park. Oh, check out the Front Brake Revolution video on bmxonline to witness Dave’s front brake insanity

- Crystal and Byrnes
Garrett Byrnes spent last week out in New York City hanging with etnies/T1 teammates Taj Mihelich and Ruben Alcantara at the etnies fall product line release party. Friday Garrett headed home to New Jersey to chill, go surfing and prepare himself for his impending school where he will be studying to be a heavy machinery operator. Garrett will be out in San Diego to compete in the PIG contest from April 18-21.
Sandy Carson has been on the trails tour of Austin seeing as how Austin now has 4 sets of awesome and very different style jumps. He got to ride some of them with Taj and also hit some street with him which made for a fun session. Sandy filmed some street with Joe Rich behind the camera, but Joe being a retard forgot his back-up battery so the session was pretty short lived much to Sandy’s dismay. Joe did get one thing right though, he managed to shoot some cool photos of Sandy riding his skateboard on the T1 ramp. Speaking of the T1 ramp, Joe and Sandy had a fun filled session on that thing to. Sandy has a DIG BMX deadline coming up which he has been stressing about but thinks he’ll get it done it time. Sandy has a new clothing sponsor called “Hollywood Wife” which he is stoked to be riding for and is very excited about. Saturday night Sandy was down town in a crowd of a lot of people and apparently there were some gang bangers not having a good time and decided to pull their guns out in the huge crowd and scare the piss out of everyone…needless to say, everyone split real quick in a HUGE stampede and Sandy survived to write his weekly team report for all you folks.
Thanks for reading...now go ride!
Video Check
Posted by: Cropley | Friday, April 8, 2005Ride BMX has a cool Friday Video up on their home page from the Front Brake Revolution contest. Some highlights include…some trick ass front brake riding at Rampage Skatepark, full demolition of multiple cars and the burning of one to the ground. The riding is accompanied by some well chosen 80’s style music followed by a pissed-off version of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by Slayer that adds to the anger of all the destruction. Well done.
Attention February Newsletter Contest Winners! Where Are You?
Posted by: Brink | Wednesday, April 6, 2005We contacted five of you etnies newsletter subscribers last month because you were picked to win free etnies and only one winner wrote back! Thomas (we don't print last names) from Colbert, Washington. Congrats, Thomas! Tom likes to ride motocross, in case anyone wanted to know. And he's cool because he's an etnies newsletter subscriber!
So basically, all this nonsense means that we are picking four more winners this week. Keep your fingers crossed and you might get a call or email from us offering you a free pair of etnies soon! There's also no reason you should't be entering the Crazy Photo Contest to be trying to win free etnies as well.

Crazy Photo Contest Extended! Stop Sucking!
Posted by: Brink | Tuesday, April 5, 2005
- Yea man, do an endo onto some girl's crotch!

- Yea yea, this chick likes BMX! Breasts and Bikes! That's a good name for a website.
People! Listen! There's not much time left. Don't you want free shoes and fame? After the last photo posting on here, it looked like people were finally getting the hang of this and we got some submissions that actually made us giggle. But now y'all are back to the usual slackin' off. You half asses!
There's like 12 of you, out of hundreds, who actually obeyed the rules. Which means that three out of those five will win shoes. What kinda crap is that?
I want to be able to give you free shoes and show your photo skills to the entire world. Don't you realize the power of etnies.com? 400 kids called town hall freaking out last week when I pranked their asses for April Fool's Day. That's at least 400 people that will see your work!
We love laughing 'till we cry, but not laughing at you. We want to laugh with you 'cuz your submission is so damn funny! Where's the comedy? Where's the inspiration and creativity? Where's the desire to win free etnies? Stop sucking and get photivated! So get this: In attempts to be fun and fair and get your brains in gear, we are extending the contest until mid-April. This gives you nearly tow more weeks to impress the hell out of us one last time. Do it, or we'll never extend a contest again.

- Is this a walk home from school on the "average" day? Maybe I am too old or something, but do you kids usually wear your jock straps outside of school?
The final day for submissions is now Sunday, April 17. So when I get back in the office on Monday, I better be cracking up at what I see or else I might just let nobody win. Muahahhahahahahahah!
Here's a few hints:
- The photo needs to have a pair of etnies in it. DUH! At least get an etnies logo in there somehow and show us you're trying.
- Don't steal a photo off of the internet and send it to us. We aren't that stupid.
The pictures of hot chicks are great, keep 'em coming. We're thankful, but just make sure they have etnies on, otherwise we're just gonna forward the photo all over the office and then toss it. - If the etnies in the photo arent visible or can be proven to be etnies, we can't allow you to win.
- No one said you can't use Photoshop. Wink wink.
- Smaller-sized files would load faster and help me get home from the office before midnight.
- Don't copy what you have already seen us post here. If we've posted it, it has already been done. Be original or you suck.

- Um...weird. For the record, etnies never sponsored a Hitler. We prefer non-racists team riders.

- This is just the absolute worst of the Photoshop attempts.

- Woah, easy there tough guy. You can't be that rough if you hang a pink Bam Margera poster in your room anyway.

- Kinda cute, but no etnies shoes. LOSER! Although the pumpkin carving skills are second-to none.

- This is just downright outrageous!

- Dude, this is getting out of hand! You put a snake in your pants? I think you meant to submit to some "other" type of site.

- Yet another hot chick with her body painted. If you can set me up me to be the body painter on her next photo shoot, you'll automatically win the contest.

- Checkout those thugs! Their ghetto gowns are in full effect! Yo yo G-Unit in the hizzy my nizzle fo shizzle!
The BMX Team Report of Some Sort
Posted by: Cropley | Tuesday, April 5, 2005
- Garrett Byrnes

- Escamilla and Eddie Fiola
Mike Escamilla drove back from Vancouver BC where he was hanging with some of Canada’s finest, Dave Osato, Jay Miron and Dustin Guenther as well as Redline teammate Rich Hirsch. The drive took about two or three days with stops in Portland and San Francisco along the way to visit some folks. Friday Mike headed out for some partying and attended his good friend Mike Ardelean’s birthday party up in Hollywood. Saturday he got to see the first public screening of the new history of BMX movie ‘Joe Kid on a Sting-Ray’. Mike got to hang out with some of the forefathers of the sport and actually has some clips in the final parts of the movie which he was really stoked about. The showing was a big-time red carpet style event with all kinds of Hollywood types there including Rick Thorne and the infamous Jesse James of Monster Garage who actually kicked down some dough to help produce the flick.
Mikes 3rd shoe the Rooftop 3 is in stores now.
Ruben Alcantara spent last week at home in Malaga and has been riding a bunch with the locals. Mid week etnies teammate Sergio Layos came to town and hung out and got some riding in at the trails, some street spots, some small ramps around town and they also got to go ride dirtbikes one day. This past weekend Ruben hung out with his family and was getting ready to head out to New York for the release of the etnies fall line of products at the etnies showroom.
Rubens first shoe the “Terranea” will be unleashed in June.
Sergio Layos spent the beginning of the week and last week at home in Madrid hanging with his friends and family and helping his mom get her business up and running. Riding has been good and mid week Sergio went down to Malaga to hang with etnies teammate Ruben Alcantara where they motorcycle riding and also rode (BMX) at the trails in Malaga that have been awesome lately since getting some rain, they also rode plenty of street aswell as some local ramps. Sergio heads out to California in a few weeks to compete in Jay Miron’s PIG contest down in San Diego.
Joe Rich’s last week went kind of like this… Joe rode the Banana Farm ramp with Wiz and Joel about a week or so ago. Then last Thursday rode the skatepark of Austin with Dave Parrick for the day. That was fun, really fun actually. He put a vert extension back up on the T1 ramp last Friday to get some more speed, like that ramp needs any more of that. Joe’s brother and his girlfriend were in town from Thursday night thru Sunday, so he mostly hung out with them. Also, Sunday he went down to a crazy track outside of San Antonio with some friends and his dad to ride dirt bikes. Good times. Today he feels sick. Blah.
Taj Mihelich rode a bunch on the T1 ramp and did some last minute work before leaving for Tempe, AZ this past weekend. He has been making some plans to give the ramp some needed TLC so to speak. Taj headed to Phoenix, AZ Thursday to rock out with his band “The Snake Trap.” It was Taj and his bands first live show in front of people and things went so-so as they had some rough times probably due to nerves, but it was fun nonetheless getting to play on a stage of that magnitude. After their set Taj got to see Bruce Crismans band play and Taj also rode a demo at the concert where he got to ride a box jump for the first time in a while which he was stoked about. Ryan Fudger was also there to shoot photos for RIDE magazine. Taj heads to New York Tuesday to visit the etnies showroom for the etnies fall product line release.
Taj’s shoe the Roscoe is in stores now.

- Roscoe doesn't look scared of no cheetah rockin' "Roscoe's."
Josh Stricker has been playing tour guide again this past week. There are whole crews of people hanging out in Austin, Josh doesn’t mind too much because it keeps him on his bike and shredding. Saturday night there was a party at Josh’s house which went off and RIDE magazines Jeff Zielinski came into town late Sunday to shoot with Josh for his upcoming interview. Josh heads out to the UK soon.
John Heaton has been stoked because the weather has been way better up in the great white north so he’s been shredding some outdoor cement parks as well as riding some street. He also got to play some outdoor hockey believe it or not. The guys who run the skatepark in Toronto allowed John and some friends to ride the outdoor park there even though it wasn’t open to the public. Some of the ramps were covered in snow still but John and the crew cleaned them up in a jiffy and proceeded to shred. The weather went from one extreme to another, later in the week the Toronto area had a snowstorm putting any outdoor riding dreams to bed. John had to drive over to his sisters house this past weekend to go over some plans for the wedding he is involved with and a drive that should have only took maybe an hour and a half to drive took three hours. The only saving grace though was the fact that John got to ride an indoor park right by his sisters house after the meeting. John will be heading out to California for Jay Miron’s PIG contest later this month. Frank the pisser!

- Freimuth was definitely not "Designated Dave" on the Local Exposure Tour.
Dave Freimuth hung out with Alan Cooke on the local exposure tour that rolled into town on Tuesday for a week. Dave and the crew spent their days off riding Area 51 and a couple local outdoor parks since the weather is finally lookin' good. Thursday they drove down to Wacousta, Wisconsin for a demo at midway skatepark. Midway has all of the ramps from the old Area 51 park so it's cool to see them set up differently. Wisconsin native, 17 year old Ray Ray stole the show with one of the biggest fufanu's of the entire tour. Friday, Dave snuck over to Area 51 with Steve Buddendeck to shoot a few photos before the demo at undercover skatepark. Dan Emmerich of Wausau, Wisconsin won the demo Friday night with some of the best lines of the night. Saturday was by far Dave’s favorite stop of the trip, Area 51. Since it was the last stop, everyone let it rip. Will Love fufanued a 4 ft railing out of a 9 ft vert quarter, Jeff K. and Dominick Trovato of midwestbmx.net fame schooled the locals with countless railing tricks and ended up getting first and second for the day and Morgan Wade dropped the bomb of the entire trip by pulling a backflip hand plant over the sub rail...twice!. It has to be seen to be believed. Brandon Hoerres of Sheboygan, Wisconsin ended up winning the entire tour and will be invited on the next local exposure tour. Congrats Brandon. Thanks to Alan and all of the sponsors for making such an amazing tour a reality.
Garrett Byrnes has been digging at the local trails now that the weather has been getting better and he also wanted to surprise his buddy John Jennings so when he got home from a trip the jumps would be up and running. Garret also rode some local cement skateparks this last week with friends and headed out to catch some waves. Surfing has been pretty good this last week but because of an off-shore flow the waves were a little bigger than normal and breaking kinda weird and Garrett has been getting his ass handed to him on a regular basis out there.
Sandy Carson spent the majority of the week riding trails with etnies teammate Joe Rich and all the locals, both 9th street and Jason Sunday’s trails are awesome right now. Sandy went swimming at the Camels hole and Twin Falls and has also been playing music in a local studio. Many late nights have been spent working on his website with his girl Jenn. Currently Sandy has been shooting a bunch with Austin local Chase Hawk and working on an article based around him. Sandy is involved with and has been working hard on three art shows in town that will be going down this summer. That’s about it for now other than the fact that Sandy is as always working on DIG BMXmagazine
April Fools!
Posted by: Brink | Monday, April 4, 2005
- Still here!
Last Friday was April Fools Day, and it was posted here that the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest was closing down and being replaced with a community garden and dog park. And you know what? YOU ALL FELL FOR IT! Some of the skateboard media even did.
Over 400 phone calls were received by town hall in less than four hours time. Obviously, they were a bit annoyed by this and asked us to take the post down. Of course, not wanting to disobey The Man, we did.
One thing is for sure, we know that people are actually reading what we post, and more importantly, thanks for supporting your (and our) skatepark. Good job skaters!
If You Can't "Have it your way" Call The Cops
Posted by: Cropley | Friday, April 1, 2005If Burger King ever messes up your western burger make sure to alert the proper authorities. This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard and you should hear it. I don't even think Burger King makes a western burger, try Carl's Jr. lady.
There is something in the water in San Clemente and after listening to this I think it's crack. Listen to this audio clip and don't do drugs kids or you will turn out like her.
