BK On The Course!

Posted by: Alex | Thursday, July 31, 2008

X Games starts today but Brian Kachinsky got started without us! He qualified 4th yesterday in a field of pretty heavy hitters and is on track to take home a medal and some dough.

Look for him to tear it up this afternoon, 4:30pm at the Staples Center in the first ever X Games BMX Street Competition here in LA.

Oh and... check out this BK feature on expn.com.

Adam In England

Posted by: Alex | Thursday, July 31, 2008

Adam Baker reports from the Red Bull Empire of Dirt:

Wow what a contest. Kyle Forte has put together one of the craziest courses of all time. After my sixteen hours of travel I arrived in London to find that the airlines had lost my baggage. At first it was no big deal but after a few days it was a real bummer. No clean clothes, no toothpaste, and worst of all no bike.

Chris Doyle had had the same problem with his baggage a week earlier and had put together a new bike before getting his real one. This left him with two bikes one of which he let me use. I thought at first that his bike would be fine. Chris and I are the same height and ride almost the same bike. I was very wrong, it felt so strange and it left me just jumping the first few jumps and stopping quickly.

On the final day of practice I got my bike I ended up taking it pretty good on an opposite curved wall ride. I smashed my face and woke up the next day to find that I had sprained my wrist pretty good. I was real bummed to sit out one of the best contests that I have ever been to.

Even thought I was wrecked, I had a good time hanging out with Dylan Smith watching Ruben, Taj and Sergio shred the course. It is also always a good time getting to hang out with Mr. Povah.

I am here in England for another week filming for the S and M video. I am healing rather slow but hoping for the best. Good luck to all the boys in the x-mess.

Cheers,
Baker

Joe Rich In The Soul Bowl

Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Just a little pic of Joe Rich in the Soul Bowl— or flying out of it really—at the US Open of Surf. No wonder he won the "Style Cat" Award; the man's got one hell of an invert.

Sergio Layos & Joe Rich!

Posted by: Alex | Monday, July 28, 2008

Did you catch the Red Bull Empire of Dirt? Then you've already seen these gravity defying shots of Sergio Layos! He didn't make the podium but, as you can see, 7th place ain't bad when you kick this much ass getting there.

Meanwhile, at the US Open of Surf in good ol' HB, Joe Rich rocked the Soul Bowl for a very respectable 4th place in points, and 1st place for the Bowl's "Style Cat" Award.

Well done, gentlemen.

Front Page Taj!

Posted by: Alex | Friday, July 25, 2008

Taj tailwhipped his way right onto today's homepage of AustinChronicle.com. And Sandy Carson got the photo credit... if that ain't teamwork, well then I don't know what is.

The caption reads:

Taj Mihelich performs a tailwhip on the new miniramp at Patterson Park, across from Mueller. The ramp, open to skateboard and BMX riders, is part of a long-range effort to provide a citywide network of public skateboarding facilities. The Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee completed the Patterson ramp project with donated funds and volunteer construction labor.

Empire Of Dirt Live

Posted by: Alex | Wednesday, July 23, 2008

It's time for our boys to get dirty across the pond... and I'll be watching the LIVE WEBCAST below, this Saturday, from the understated comfort of my LoveSac. I suggest you do the same or you'll miss the aerial stylings of Taj, Baker, Sergio, Ruben and Perico (riding for etnies Spain!).

Red Bull Empire of Dirt is the the world's first BMX dirt slopestyle contest. The course has got "every thing you could ever dream of if you're into BMX". If last year's course is anything to go by, the event is going to be something serious to behold. After having been totally washed out last year, riders, organizers and spectators alike have been waiting patiently to get back to the Devon Dirt to take care of some unfinished business.

At last the wait is almost over... 35 world class riders from all over the globe are packing their bags while the last tones of dirt are being positioned. They're off to Newton Abbot in Devon, UK to have an awesome weekend. Applications for tickets are already closed so if you haven't already got one, you ain't going. But never fear, as this event is ultra gnarly the Freecaster.tv team will, of course, be there to make sure you don't miss a dirty bit of it.

This One's For My Vegans...

Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Where my vegans at?! This one's for you.

So you wanna know which of our shoes are vegan? Lots of you have asked, and while I do enjoy spending my time sending the same email over and over... and over... it's YOUR time that I don't wanna waste. As such, we've added a new little vegan symbol to the site. Now you can browse all our footwear and rest assured that anytime you see that symbol underthe product description, it's totally animal-free and friendly.

etnies vegan animal-friendly

Of course, it'll be smaller than that... more like this.

Here's a big fat list of our vegan shoes for Fall, but for future seasons and while perusing our fine wares, don't forget that the materials, and thus vegan-ness, vary between colorways of the same shoe so be sure to click each color. Thanks for caring about the beef!

Layos Update!

Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, July 22, 2008

What's up with Sergio Layos? I was wondering that very same thing until I got his update email. And here it is for you read... because sharing is caring.

hey man! how you doing?
news:
I spent some times with Ruben and my friend Guiri on the north west coast of Spain. That is an area that is not really discovered yet and it has some amazing places. We spent there a week, surfing and riding. After that I had to leave to the Canary Islands for a demo at a
music festival. It was really fun but I went there for a day and that is not much for a place like that. After that I came back home for my birthday and my brother prepared a little party on the trails. It was really fun! Here are some pictures of it here! After that I haven't been doing much... sometimes coming back home is like a little holiday for me.

I hope you like the pictures!

Mike Vincent EBay Auction

Posted by: Alex | Monday, July 14, 2008

mike vincent ebay auction benefit

LOS ANGELES (July 12, 2008) -- On January 18, while riding his bike to work Mike Vincent, a former BMX rider who has been a prominent fixture in the sport for many years, was struck by a car. He sustained major head trauma and many bodily injuries, including the possibility of permanent loss of sight. Like many action sports athletes, Mike did not have any insurance at the time of the accident therefore payment for all of his treatment and future rehabilitation and surgeries, outside of a life-threatening emergency, will have to come out of his own pocket.

In addition to competing in BMX, Mike has worked as a judge for all of the major action sports competitions, including the X Games, LG Action Sports World Tour, AST Dew Tour, and the former Gravity Games. He has also been a part of most of the core BMX competitions, including Rebel Jam and the CFB events. During the off-season he worked as a professional caddy at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, in Gainesville, VA.
Over the last few months the industry has assisted Mike by participating in local fundraisers and donating their heart, time and money when needed. However, the need is greater than anyone could have ever imagined and the support must continue in every way possible. Realizing that at any time Mike’s plight could be their own, the industry has established an Ebay auction to raise funds for Mike’s current and future treatment. At the 6th month mark of Mike’s accident, an auction will be opened on EBay. On Friday, July 18th, at 12:00 PM EST the auction will go live online. Many athletes and friends have graciously donated items for this cause. All items will be offered for only 10 days. Final bids must be completed by 12:00 PM EST on July 27th.

Some of the auction items include:
* DC x SE Quadrangle 24 in Cruiser: Limited Edition
* Haro Forum Pro Lite BMX: autographed by Ryan Nyquist

etnies Canadian Concrete Jam

Posted by: Alex | Thursday, July 10, 2008

The 1st etnies Canadian concrete jam of the year was our best and biggest one to date. The largest Am class, the largest and heaviest Pro class and the youngest rippers threw down at this North Vancouver park on Sunday the 22nd.

etnies cdn concrete bmx jam series

The top 5 for Am was probably the hardest to judge due to the number of entries and the sheer magnitude of talent, but the judges did their jobs well (the judges included Pro riders Sam Lowe and James Steele) and narrowed it down to the top 5:

5th dustin dobson
4th kyle spence
3rd dillon king
2nd dave struthers (ride on!)
1st carl arnett

The 13 and under class was amazing with Anthony Messere riding as good as any of the top 5 Ams, and at only 12 years old! Way to go anthony!

The Pro class was stacked and was the hardest Pro class to judge yet. 8 foot high 540's (shirtless!), huge flairs and tailwhips, over the fence to pallet action, and brakeless-chainless 720 over the spine attempts, had the spectators and riders alike going nuts watching the shredding. we were blessed to have Jason Enns on hand to be a judge for this class, and the standings went down like this for the money at Kirkstone:

3rd was 3 way tie between:
anthony alex
james steele
andy roode

2nd travis sexsmith

1st wade lajlar (etnies)

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we couldn't run the over 30 masters class at Kirkstone... we apologize to the guys who entered, and thank them for coming out and riding their asses off regardless.

Brian Kachinsky In The Papers

Posted by: Alex | Thursday, July 3, 2008

Yo yo,

This is a scanned copy of an article the Appleton newspaper just ran on me. It was the biggest article in the sports section with a really big color photo of the Ride cover. Newspapers (especially sports sections) are hard to deal with sometimes because they don't quite grasp what we do (hence the "racing" references..haha) but I think it turned out alright. I scanned these black and white so they wouldn't be enormous files to email.

Talk Soon!

Sometimes... sometimes it takes a few bumps and scrapes to nail a trick. And sometimes, you gotta kill yourself in order to really kill it! Just ask Justin Simpson:

Adam Goes Skateboarding?

Go Skateboarding Day, as seen through the eyes of etnies BMX pro Adam Baker:

Skateboarding. One of the coolest activities that has ever been invented. There is some strange feeling that comes for the simple activity of floating across the concrete on a board. For me it is the closest quick fix for surfing that I can get living in Arizona.

I have always had some tie to the skate industry. I ride for a skate company (Sole Tech) and most of my friends skate, because of these things I always have a bit of a grasp on what the skate industry is doing, what new video is out, or what crazy new shit some skater just did. Or, for this example, what day Go Skateboarding Day is.

This was the first year that I was involved with Go Skateboarding Day. A good friend of mine, Tyler, owns the skate shop Calavera.

Tyler is very involved with the city and so he got the entire street closed down for the morning out in front of his shop.

I need to mention that there where cops on hand the whole time. Ahh!

With the street being closed down, kids brought ramps and rails to skate. I spent over and hour trying to do a “rock to fakie”.

There were also a few games including worst kick flip and most kick flips in a minute. I think someone did 24. He was beat after that effort. I think that would be the equivalent of doing 24 bunny hop bar spins in a minute.

After that there was a poker run to the skate park. There were stops where kids could win some new gear. Once at the skate park several bands played including “The Swim”, “Hour of the Wolf” and “The High Rollers”. Sorry there are no photos of the bands. I left to go to the trails. I could only handle so much of sucking at skating.
